Overview of Research Questions and Trajectory

My research agenda for the next five years emphasizes Black immigrant youth (BIY) experiences. I seek to influence pedagogy by exploring ways to amplify BIY voices through multiliteracies. I also aim to influence policy by conducting policy analysis research to interrogate how education policy frames immigrant youth and the nature of support that policy provisions stipulate for immigrant youth in general and BIY in particular. Additionally, I will conduct research that examines policy implementation at the district and classroom levels in relation to BIY.

Below is a graphic that provides an overview of the areas of emphasis for my research. Some of the research questions that I anticipate exploring over the next five years are shared below. These are broad questions that I will further break down into more specific units when conducting research.

  1. How do BIY articulate their experiences of K-12 schooling in the US?
  2. How do we design learning spaces to support BIY identity navigation?
  3. What is the role of multiliteracies in supporting BIY identity navigation?
  4. How do BIY take up or resist dominant discourses about their identities?
  5. What supports do educators need to design culturally responsive educational programs for BIY?
  6. How do local education agencies interpret education policy in relation to funding support for BIY?
  7. How could knowledge of the school systems in BIY countries of origin influence educator's approach to working with and supporting BIY?
